I felt this board was getting a bit lonely, so here's a common cosplay topic: Binding.
After all, most male anime characters... Well to put it bluntly, they do not have boobs >>;; Some cosplayers don't actually have to worry about this much *cough*hippoisevillikethat*cough* but most others... Notsomuch.
So some of the methods I've come across are; Ace Bandages, Compression Shirts/Vests Sports Tape/Duct Tape (Typically for open-chest binding) 2 small sports bras (for those people with smaller chests) etc, etc
Personally, I use a homemade compression vest (surprisingly enough, it actually does a pretty good job >>; ), with a small sports bra on top to keep it from slipping. It doesn't get me completely flat, though, so I'm planning on trying it with a layer of ace bandages over it.
Now, talk away. (Note: if you're curious about any of the methods I mentioned... Feel free to ask about them, and I shall explain. *nodnod*)

I was in a discussion on the cosplay.com boards about the sports/duct tape method... Just so you know, if any of you decide to use that technique, promptly go and take it off if it starts to itch. Apparently blisters can form and they leave behind scars.
I've never actually used this technique, but I think everyone should be informed about it.

Yeah, I read about the too. Scarring is baaad. I think it's also important to know that you should watch out for any pain that happens using this metheod. Mostly because some people are allergic to the adhesive used in sport tapes. *nodnod*
(This is a method that I'm actually planning to try... I just haven't yet D: )

My sister has open shirt bound before with that type of tape. She said the most pain she had was the soreness afterwards & during. But thats the most I know about that type of binding.
I've bound with the Ace bandages before and let me tell you they are as hard as heck to keep from falling down. I've had two conventions that my binding has fallen down. I've slowly stopped useing Ace bandages and use the girdles that they sell at places like walmart. Just wear it around your chest insted of your stomach. Sometimes though it dosen't hold you in well enough. I'm think about bind with the Ace Bandages and then wearing the girdle over that and see how that works. I'll post if it does (Next con is next week)
I've had little problems with binding, (except for it falling) The only time it hurts is when I run. <.< Which I suppose I shouldn't do that. And the other time it hurt was when I was sun burnt..... yeah well... I guess thats self explanatory. ^_^

Surprisingly enough, I've never had trouble with Ace bandages slipping. All I do is stick a tight sports bra over it, and that basically keeps them still for me. If you wanted to take it a step further, you could use safety pins to secure the bindings to the sports bra.

Eek.
I don't think I'll ever try binding.. ><
If I ever feel the need to crossplay, (which I will/plan to) I'm just going to have to be -insert male character- with boobs.

I was tempted to do that at first... But after some experimenting I found that it wasn't actually all that painful, and that the satisfaction of having people ask if I was a guy was kind of worth it xDD Butyah, that's just me, the ub3r perfectionist~
Actually, if you wanted something a good bit less painful then full binding, and didn't mind not getting completely flat, you could try using the binding rather loosely, or just layering two small sports bras. (One facing forward, the other backward is the typical setup, but you can do both facing forward as well, or possibly even a single small sports bra...).

Hm.. I might try a couple of these. :]
Really, I only plan to maybe try an Umehito from Host Club and then my Sasuke bunny, though. -doesn't have the physique for serious crossplaying-
But.. Neko has a couple layers and the bunny is supposed to be funny rather than serious, so even if you can tell despite the baggy-ness of the outer bunny suit it may not be a problem.
Buuut my plans & ideas change a lot, so I will probably have to reference back to this sooner or later. O:

I've yet to try a crossplay, but what a friend of mine does is she wears a sports bra then applies duct tape over top of that so that she doesn't really encounter sores and such. Not sure if most people who use tape or whatnot do that, but for my friend is under the impression that people use just the tape and that sounds painful ><

I have and i still crossplay. I've done from regular binding to open shirt binding. For regular binding i use, what Tenten said, a gurdelish corset thing that i bought in the undergarments section of walmart for no more than $10. it works! while i'm not quite "gifted" per say in that area.... i'm sure that is you flatten yourself out with the sports bra technique you could put this over top for added comfort and smoothness. I'm also open shirt bound. This one you need to know what you are doing. the first time i tired it was the worst. It was painful. but don't let that steer you away from trying it. I found out the hard way that if you have all the air out of your lungs when you put the tape on then it will hurt greatly when you go to breath with it on. The right way to do open shirt binding would be to have your lunge either half way or all the way full and then hold your breath while putting the sports tape on. You're still flat after all is said and done. doing my binding this way i was able to wear it all day and as far as i can tell i have no scars from it either. just take it off slowly don't rip it off, it's like a band aid. Sen-chan: Your friend has the right idea by putting the tape over a sports bra -- It's safer and probably less painful to take off then over plain skin. But really, unless they're doing open chest binding, Ace Bandages are used more commonly then full-out tape (In my experience, at least). Non-sticky Ace Bandage, usually.
Uchiha Sakura: ... I am so jealous. I've been wanting to try open chest binding but keep chickening out, being lazy, and being unable to get a ride to the stupid store for supplies. Butyus :3 I think I'll definitely take some of your advice when I finally do try it. You have obviously had some amazing successes from it!

Go for it! It pretty easy just takes some time to get the whole taping right part done. oh and have either a half role or a full roll of tape when you bind each time. Feel free to use what ever you want that i mentioned. I don't know if i would call it amazing but it's decent. Oh btw one thing that i forgot to mention. if you lean forward or bend down there is a chance that your binding will show. I haven't tired it but i have been told that you can put foundation on the tape to make it mach your skin then you wouldn't have to worry about that.

Thanks so much! ^^ I think I'll try to swing by a drugstore on the way to the fabric store sometime this week... If I can get the parents to drive me, that is. But I'll definitely be posting a picture of the results when I finally do it!

Being slightly on the 'gifted' side might be the resoning to why my binding slips alot, and as I sad the only time it hurts is when you run or walk quickly. The 2 sports bra method really dosen't work for me. It dosen't keep me in as well as it should making me look like a slightly beefy man + more XD Though doing as my sister did (binding she used in her Chunnin Sasuke) works perfectly fine for me ( I just have to have the binding under as well) Slightly gifted me: After Binding (Near): And a random note: Never, I repeat... NEVER bind while sun burnt..... its just a big ol' bowl of pain... *sniffle*

Seeing this topic made me remember something
If you're doing an open-chest bind with ace bandages, make sure the bandage is flesh colored
I remember seeing a girl doing a Shippuden Sasuke cosplay at PCM. It was a good cosplay, but the little problem was that the bandage she used to chest bind was like a cream-ish color. Not only that, but it appeared to be a bit dirty, too. She also didn't seem to put it on tight enough to make her flat-chested, you can still see she had boobs. And no, I'm not a pervert, I just happen to see her standing there while I was walking into another hallway and noticed the little things she could've modified.
So what I'm saying is: 1) I already said this, but if you're planning to open chest bind with ace bandages, you wanna make sure it's at least close to flesh color. If the bandage makes it look like you have a strange tan over your chest, no worries, that's why Photoshop is there
and 2) If you're doing a female to male cosplay, you'd want the bandage around tight enough to give you that flat-chested look (whether it'd be open-chest or not), but not tight enough to a point where you can't breathe.
